Homemade Baby Wipes

Homemade Baby Wipes

Are you looking for a solution to commercial baby wipes that can irritate your baby’s skin?  Are you looking for something less expensive?  Here’s your solution.

These homemade wipes are so simple to make, there’s really no excuse not to.  It’s just half a paper towel roll, water, coconut oil, and some essential oils.  No chemicals, no preservatives.

Homemade Baby Wipes

One of the best things about these is the oils involved.  Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial, and it soothes and softens skin.

In addition to the coconut oil, the melaleuca oil also has antifungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties.  What better thing to wipe a messy bum with than with something that you know is getting rid of the germs

What about the lavender oil?  What is it doing in this recipe?  It has skin soothing elements.  Lavender essential oil is actually recommended for soothing and healing diaper rashes and sunburns.  So, if you apply a little lavender oil in the form of a wipe every time you change your baby’s diaper, it may help reduce the chances of a diaper rash.

I’ll add one more thing just in case you’re not totally convinced yet.  I personally love these wipes because they’re not super smooth like commercial wipes.  Yes they’re soft, but depending on the brand of paper towels you choose, they may have little ridges on them as you can see in the photo above.  These ridges actually help get everything off your baby’s bum quicker.  The less time I have to spend smelling the uckiness, the better.

Homemade Baby Wipes

1 roll premium paper towels (I used Viva Vantage)
2 cups warm water (distilled* is recommended)
2 T fractionated coconut oil*
3-4 drops lavender essential oil*
3-4 drops melaleuca essential oil*
an airtight storage container that will fit half a paper towel roll

*These ingredients can be found in our store.

Directions:

Cut paper towel roll in half.  (I found that using a sharp, non-serrated knife worked best.)  Use half the roll now and half later.

Combine water, fractionated coconut oil, and essential oils in a small bowl.

Place the paper towels in your container and pour the mixture over them.  Cover with the airtight lid and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Turn the container over and let it sit for another 10 minutes.

Remove and discard the cardboard middle.  Pull the wipes from the center when you are ready to use them.
