How to Make Produce Last Longer with a BluappleDawn Mikesell
Prolong freshness in your fridge while saving money on spoiled produce with Bluapple. This little blue apple features an active ingredient that is designed to provide effective ethylene gas absorption for three months in your refrigerator.
Ethylene gas is given off naturally by fruits and vegetables as a signaling mechanism in order to coordinate uniform ripening. However, once concentrated in your refrigerator or other storage areas, the presence of ethylene gas continues to speed up ripening and hasten spoilage.
The Bluapple is designed to provide effective ethylene gas absorption for three months in a typical home refrigerator produce bin or storage container. The active ingredient does not “wear out”, but continues to absorb ethylene until it has reached its capacity.
These two pictures of lettuce are my experiment with the Bluapple. I kept two halves of the same head of lettuce in my fridge for 3 weeks. One half was in a crisper drawer with a Bluapple in it and the other was in a crisper drawer without a Bluapple. The difference is pretty awesome. The half with the Bluapple browned a little, but is still crisp and has not changed its shape. The second half – the one left all alone – is more browned, quite soft, and has started to shrivel and change its shape.
With a little shaving off of the browned edges, I’d still eat the half on the left. The half on the right, however, is definitely past edible.
